CISF Raising Day: March 9

9th March of every year is observed as Central Industrial Security Force Raising Day. It was on this day in 1969 that CISF came into existence. CISF is a Central Armed Police Force in India. CISF has become the largest industrial security force in the world.

CISF was set up under the act of Parliament of India on March 9 1969 with strength of 2800. Later it went on to become an armed force of the Union of India. Through another act of Parliament passed on 15 June, 1983.

It started a meek beginning, with only three battalions to provide an integrated security to the Public Sector Undertakings (PSU’s). Its current strength corresponds to 165,000 personnel and this figure is expected to get increased in next 2-3 years. CISF headquarters are at Delhi and is directly under the Federal Ministry of Home Affairs.

With globalization and fast growing economy CISF is no longer a PSU centric force. Instead CISF’s readiness and competency has made it premier multi skilled security agency of the nation. It is mandated to provide security to the critical infrastructures establishments of the country in different areas.

CISF is currently providing security cover to airports, seaports, to industrial sectors like atomic power plants, space installations, oil fields and refineries, sensitive government buildings, heritage monuments. It also provides security to defense production units like Indian Ordnance Factories, DRDO, mints, heavy engineering. Steel plants, hydroelectric power plants,, barrages and many more.

Among the major responsibilities entrusted to CISF is the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, VIP security, Disaster Management and establishment of a Forced Police Unit (FPU) of the U.N at Haiti.

CISF celebrated its 44th Raising Day at the 5th Reserve Battalion in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad. On this day parade was held which was reviewed by External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid. Also President Pranab Mukherjee attended the reception hosted by the CISF Director General Rajiv at CISF headquarters at Delhi.

CISF has reportedly provided consultancy services to more than 65 different organizations. After the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, it has been broadened to provide direct security cover to private sector also. Recently CISF was designated to work at the Uttarakhand Flood disaster. It even helped the victims by contributing its one day salary.

The CISF Act has been amended for the force to prosper in its field and achieve greater heights. With its high professional accomplishments and expertise over the decades CISF has become the ‘unrivaled force’ in its field.
